Define: Subcultures
Groups within a dominant culture
Define: material culture
All objects or things made and used by members of a cultural group: buildings, furniture, clothing, artwork, etc.
Define: non-material culture
A wide range of beliefs, values, myths, and symbolic meanings that are transmitted across generations of a given society.
Define: folk
Describes rural people who live in an old-fashioned way. Homogeneous. Strong family. Man made things.
Define: folk geography
The study of the spatial patterns and ecology of these traditional groups
Define: popular culture
Generated from and concentrated mainly in urban areas
Define: indigenous culture
Indigenous- native or of native origin. Thought of as subcultures (folk and indigenous) in relation to a dominant popular culture

A spatial standardization that diminishes regional variety and demeans the human spirit
Define: Vernacular culture region
The product of the spatial perception of the population at large
Define: Convergence hypothesis
Cultures are converging(becoming more alike)
Define: Local consumption cultures
The consumption practices and preferences formed in specific places and historical moments
Define: Consumer nationalism
Local customers avoid imported products and favor locally produced alternatives
Define: Colonialism
Indigenous populations were often accused of destroying the environment.
Define: ITK

Those that are oriented primarily toward production for local consumption, rather than the production of commodities for sale on the market
