What was Jamestown?

A

Jamestown was a British settlement established by the London Company (later renamed the Virginia Company) in 1607. The settlement faced many difficulties stabilizing due to outbreaks in Malaria, hot humid summers, powerful Indian tribes, lack of women, and distinct climates.

A

De La Warr was a Jamestown’s first governor. De La Warr convinced emigrating settlers to return back to Jamestown were he set up work gangs with harsh punishments.

What did the Virginia Company offer to attract settlers to Jamestown in their 1618 campaign?

A

The Virginia Company set effect the headright system. They offered 50 acres(a headright) of land for every person who migrated to to Jamestown. Also, anyone who paid for the passage of other immigrants received an extra headright. Iron workers, skilled craftsmen, and women were also sent to Jamestown to diversify the population. The settlers were promised full rights of English men and a share in self-government.
