Chapter 2: Toxicology Flashcards
Fundamental Principle of Toxicology
There are no harmless substances, only harmless ways of using substances
Toxicants
- Can be physical or chemical
- Example fiber toxicant = asbestos
Toxicity
The degree to which a substance/toxicant can harm humans or animals
*Can not be reduced
Toxic Hazard
Likelihood of damage to biological organisms based on the conditions of the exposure
*Can be reduced
How do toxicants enter biological organisms?
Ingestion, Inhalation, Injection, Dermal absorption
Modes of Entry/Methods of Control
- Gastrointestinal (GI) tract
- Skin
- Respiratory System
Where do toxicants go?
Excretion, detoxification, storage
What do toxicological studies quanitfy?
Effects of suspected toxicant on an organism usually animals which is then extrapolated to humans
Measure response as a function of dose
Factors defined for toxicological testing
- form of toxicant
- target/test organism
- effect/response mechanism
- dose range
- period of test
What is a response?
Lethality, severity of irritation, blood pressure
Dose
exposure concentration and duration
