Who was Gustav Stresemann and what was his work?
He was appointed chancellor in October 1923 by Ebert. He convinced Germany’s moderate and democratic parties to work together, he re-established Germany’s position on the world stage and he tackled the desperate state of the German economy
How did Stresemann stabilise the German economy?
He introduced a temporary currency called the Rentenmark, which was replaced in October 1924 after the economy stabilised by Reichmark that was placed under the control of the Reischbank and not the government as it had been in the past
What was the Dawes’ plan
A series of measured proposed by Charles Dawes in 1924 that addressed the problem of reparations for Germany by the French agreeing to leave the Ruhr, reparations themselves being reduced to 1 billion a year until the economy stabilised and there would be a further review of reparations (Young Plan)
What was the role of the US government, banks and businesses for the Dawes plan?
They invested $4 billion into Germany to improve the country and by 1928, it had returned to the same level of production as before WWII
What was the Young Plan?
Stresemann negotiating in 1929 to reduce reparations from £6.6 billion to £1.85 billion and giving Germany an extra 59 years to pay
What were the Locarno Treaties and what did they lead to?
A signing in Switzerland that intended to bring about world peace and which led to Germany being invited to join the league of Nations
What did the league of nations do for Stresemann?
They helped him negotiate the Young plan and the agreement of the removal of the French troops from the Rhineland
What was the Kellog Briand Pact?
An international agreement signed by over 60 countries agreeing not to use war to solve international disputes
