Chapter 2, The Nature Of Matter Flashcards
substance
is a single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has a specific makeup
Matter
is anything that has mass and takes up space
physical property
a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.
chemical property
a characteristic of a pure substance that describes it’s ability to change into another substance
element
is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means
atom
the basic particle from which all elements are made
chemical bond
holds atoms together, force of attraction between two atoms
molecules
atoms combine to form larger particles
compound
a pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio.
chemical formula
shows the elements in the compound and the ratio of atoms
mixture
is made of two or more substances, elements, compounds, or both, that are together in the same place but not chemically combined. each substance keeps it’s individual properties. parts are not combined in a set ratio.
heterogeneous mixture
You can see the different parts
homogeneous mixture
substances are so evenly mixed, that you can’t see the different parts
solution
type of homogeneous mixture
physical change
is any change that alters the form or appearance of matter but does not make any substance in the matter into another substance
chemical change
a change in matter that produces one or more new substances
law of conservation of matter
the fact that matter is not created or destroyed in any chemical or physical change
energy
is the ability to do work or cause change
temperature
is a measure of the average energy of random motion of particles of matter
thermal energy
is the total energy of all the particles in an object
chemical energy
the energy stored in the chemical bonds between atoms
electromagnetic energy
a form of energy that travels through space as waves
electrical energy
the energy of electrically charged particles moving from one place to another
electrodes
a metal strip that conducts electricity
