Q

Define Islam

A

Islam (اسلام) is the name of a famous religion amongst the religions of the world.

It is the religion of truth containing both thoughts and practices.

According the Qur’an, it is the true religion with Allah the Exalted and the final and complete version of the divine guidance.

Islam is derived from the word “Salam”, which means “Peace” and “Safety”.

Islam itself means “to surrender”.

Islam is a complete code of life set and revealed by Allah to the last of His messengers to guide his slaves (Mankind & Jinn) to the success in life and afterlife.

Q

What is the difference between Islam and other religions?

A

Islam differs from other religions by offering a comprehensive guide for life.

Unlike many religions that focus on specific traditions during certain life events, Islam provides a systematic structure for worship, social interactions, economics, politics, and law.

It covers every aspect of life, including daily routines like eating, sleeping, and dressing, all governed by Islamic teachings and commandments.

Furthermore, Islam is not a man-made religion. Its teachings are absolute, sent down by Allah (S.W.A) to Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) via Jibreel (A.S).

Supporting Ayats

And truly, this is the revelation from the lord of all worlds. The trustworthy spirit (Jibreel) brought it down. Upon your heart, so that you may become one of the warners. In plain Arabic language.

Surah Ash-Shu’ara | Verse 192 - 195
(26:195-192 Quran)

Q

What are the five pillars of Islam, and how did they come to be?

A

The five pillars of Islam are as follows:

  • Shahadah (Faith)
  • Salah (Prayer)
  • Zakah (Alms | Charity)
  • Hajj (Pilgrimage)
  • Sawm (Fasting)

The conception of the five pillars came to be when Jibreel (A.S) visited Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in the form of a human man, and asked him the following:

O Muhammad! Tell me about Islam.

Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) replied:

Islam is that you bear the witness that there is no worshiped one (God) except Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and you establish Prayers, and you pay Charity, and you keep the Fasts of Ramadan, and you perform Hajj of the House if you can manage the way to it.

Supporting Hadith

Islam is constructed upon five (pillars), bearing the witness that there is no worshiped one (God) except Allah and Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is a slave to Him and His messenger, establishing Prayers (Salah), paying Charity (Zakah), performing pilgrimage ( Hajj) and keeping Fasts of Ramadan (Saum)

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Keep in mind that these five pillars do not encapsulate all the vast issues Islam addresses. These five pillars are just an introduction to Islam.

Ayat In Support of The First Pillar of Islam

I created not Jinn and Mankind except for that they should worship me.

Q

Describe the finality of Islam

A

Islam is the sole religion recognized by Allah, and it is considered the ultimate version of revealed religions. The Qur’an asserts the importance of believing in Islam before death, emphasizing that true religion is Islam.

Supporting Ayats

Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allah, then indeed, Allah is swift in [taking] account.

Surah Ali' Imran| Ayat 19
(3:19 Quran)

This verse highlights that Islam is the true religion, and differences among those who received previous scriptures arose due to jealousy and animosity, emphasizing the importance of belief in Allah’s verses.

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

Surah Ali' Imran| Ayat 102
(3:102 Quran)

Furthermore, those who do not accept Islam before dying, will forever be regarded as disbelievers

Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - never would the [whole] capacity of the earth in gold be accepted from one of them if he would [seek to] ransom himself with it. For those there will be a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.

Surah Ali' Imran| Ayat 91
(3:91 Quran)

Abu Huraira (R.A) narrated that the messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

Any Jew or Christian who hears about me and then dies without believing in what I have been sent with (Islam), will definitely be among the inhabitants of Hell.
