Chapter 2 Terms Flashcards
1
Q
Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMR)
A
- Changes in electrons/wavespeed.
- All objects emit/reflect EMR (unless at absolute zero)
- Cannot be created or destroyed
2
Q
EMR Wave Properties
A
- Wavelength- distances between waves.
- Frequency- number of crests passing a fixed point in a given time.
- Amplitude- the height of each peak.
3
Q
3 Ways an EMR wave can be emitted by surfaces
A
- Transmission- transparent to certain wavelengths and goes through it uninhibited.
- Absorption- energy absorbed by surface/substance, has to emit radiant/energy in another form.
- Reflection- wavelength bounces of surface which changes its direction.
4
Q
Passive Remote Sensing
A
- Uses reflected/emitted energy from sun for EMR.
5
Q
Active Remote Sensing
A
- Sensor shoots out energy to read reflected energy.
2. Radar, Lidar.
6
Q
Types of Scattering
A
- Defintion- energy is spread out/scattered.
- Clear Atmosphere Scattering- UV scattered in high altitudes.
- Mie Scattering- small particles scatter EMR.
- Non-Selective Scattering- large particles scatter EMR.
7
Q
Rayleigh Scattering
A
- Particles scatter shortwave radiation, makes sky blue.
