Chapter 2 Terms Flashcards

1
Q

Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMR)

A
  1. Changes in electrons/wavespeed.
  2. All objects emit/reflect EMR (unless at absolute zero)
  3. Cannot be created or destroyed

Q

EMR Wave Properties

A
  1. Wavelength- distances between waves.
  2. Frequency- number of crests passing a fixed point in a given time.
  3. Amplitude- the height of each peak.

Q

3 Ways an EMR wave can be emitted by surfaces

A
  1. Transmission- transparent to certain wavelengths and goes through it uninhibited.
  2. Absorption- energy absorbed by surface/substance, has to emit radiant/energy in another form.
  3. Reflection- wavelength bounces of surface which changes its direction.

Active Remote Sensing

A
  1. Sensor shoots out energy to read reflected energy.

Q

Types of Scattering

A
  1. Defintion- energy is spread out/scattered.
  2. Clear Atmosphere Scattering- UV scattered in high altitudes.
  3. Mie Scattering- small particles scatter EMR.
  4. Non-Selective Scattering- large particles scatter EMR.
