Chapter 2 Terms Flashcards
If A is a number then -(-A) is =
A
IMPORTANT: When Subtracting 2 Numbers. If A, and B are numbers, then a +(-b) =
a - b.
Inequality
A statement between two quantities usually separated by a sign of inequality. Signifying less than, greater than, or not equal to.
What does it mean to say the sum of a number and its opposite is 0?
If A Is a number, then A +(-A) = 0 -A + A = 0
ADDING two integers with DIFFERENT signs
Subtract the smaller absolute value from the Larger absolute value. Use the Sign of the number w/ the largest Absolute value for the answer.
The Product of an ODD number of _______ is an negative result but, an EVEN number of _________ is a positive number.
Negatives (-) / Negatives (-)
Integers
A whole number (Positive or Negative) -1,0,1
Additive Inverse
The additive inverse of a number is the opposite of that number, that is, the additive inverse of a number x is -x. The sum of a number and its additive inverse is always zero, that is, x + (-x) = 0.
Absolute value
The magnitude of a number regardless of its sign. Hence, the absolute value of a number “X” is always positive or zero. It is written as |x|. When the number “X” is represented on a number line, its absolute value is the distance from the origin (zero) to that number. -l-x l = x |-x| = x -|x| = -x |0| = 0
ADDING Integers with the a SAME signs
Add Their two absolute Values& Use their common sign.
Is 0 a Positive or Negative Number
Neither
A way of grouping nnumbers into categories based on their structure
Number Classifications
non-negative counting numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, … . Some exclude 0 (zero) from the set
Natural Numbers
Both Positive and negativeNatural Numbers(Whole Numbers) -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4,
Integers
Integers that include both fractions and decimals The ratio or quotient of an integer and another NON-ZERO integer -100, -20¼, -1.5, 0, 1, 1.5, 1½ 2¾, 1.75
Rational Number
