Chapter 2: Supervising Diving Activities Flashcards
As a divemaster, your role is generally to provide _______ planning that other divers use to plan their individual buddy team dives within.
Broad
List three ways that wind can affect dive conditions
- Cause waves
- Creates water motion that stirs up the bottom
- Causes upwelling
The rule of thumb is that it is best to dive at ______ tide, but this is a general rule.
High Slack Tide
List three broad considerations when planning dives for remote areas.
- Plan to cover for more logistics such as food, water, etc…
- Plan for emergencies: Might need to bring more emergency supplies.
- Plan in terms of self sufficiency. Think of what ifs and how to deal with those situations. Extra forms of communications (satellite phone?).
The primary reason for having and using accounting procedures is to be sure every diver returns from the dive. Incident reports indicate that problems with this usually result from________.
Failure to use an accounting procedure at all.
List six characteristics of responsible diver behavior
- Planning dives within limits of training and experience for diver and buddy, and staying within those limits during the dive.
- Having the proper equipment
- Maintaining equipment as required
- Checking air supply regularly
- Staying within no-stop limits & making safety stops.
- Diving in an environmentally stable manner.
What are four ways you can encourage responsible diver behavior?
- Be a role model by following responsible dive practices
- During dive plan or briefing, suggest or remind divers of responsible diving behaviors
- Make responsible behaviors easier logistically.
- Reward responsible behaviors by acknowledging them.
Paying attention to a divers _____ may help you assess for apprehension or stress related to the dive.
Behavior
Signs and symptoms of psychological stress include
- Being uncharacteristically withdrawn
- Talkativeness
- Irritability
- Distraction
- Perceptual narrowing
Before a dive along a wall that drops into extremely deep water, you notice a diver seems preoccupied and withdrawn. You talk tot he diver and learn the person doesn’t feel adequately skilled with the buoyancy control and dears descending out of control. Give an example of helping this diver by removing the stressor:
Suggest a different dive site with a shallower bottom
List the four aspects of supervision in managing dives and identify what each consists of
- Planning: Includes both making a plan and acting on that plan by having the appropriate equipment and being ready to respond to problems and needs.
- Communication: The step in which you inform divers about procedures, the dive plan and other necessary information (Dive briefing)
- Vantage Point: The process of choosing from where you’ll supervise the group
- Recognition: Anticipating and identifying possible problems so you can prevent, correct or respond to them as part of supervising the dive
List eight types of equipment that can assist in supervising certified divers
- Dive roster
- Binoculars
- Dive site maps
- emergency Oxygen
- AED
- First aid kit
- Pocket mask
- Rescue float
- Marine radio
List two advantages and disadvantages of in water supervision
Advantages
1. Close to divers so you can prevent or respond to problems quickly.
2. It can reduce problems such as divers exceeding their maximum depth, making navigation errors or running too low on air, because you’re there to guide and remind them.
Disadvantages
1. If you’re diving with a group, it’s the only group you can watch.
2. Some divers don’t like diving in a group
List two advantages and disadvantages of out of water supervision
Advantages
1. Easiest way to supervise multiple buddy teams
2. It puts you close to emergency related equipment such as oxygen, first aid kit, radio or telephone, etc.. and can speed medical aid in case of a dive accident
Disadvantages
1. You’re not immediately at hand to remind divers to dive responsibly (stay within their limits, follow proper dive procedures, follow dive plan etc)
2. You cant lead divers to points of interest
List 10 points a dive briefing usually includes
- Dive site name
- Site description
- Role of the divemaster
- Entry and exit techniques
- Dive procedures
- Emergency procedures
- Signal reviews
- Roster/ buddy check
- Environmental Orientation
- Predive safety checks
