Chapter 2 Social Studies Flashcards
Region
A region is an area with at least one feature that makes it different from other areas. The features of a community might include its landforms or climate. Another feature that makes a region different from others is its population.
Population
The population of a place is the number of people living there.
Urban
Most people in the United States live in or near urban, or city, regions. A city is the largest kind of community. A city has busy streets, many people, and tall buildings. Cities need more schools and businesses than smaller communities do. In a city, crowded buses and trains carry people from place to place.
Harbor
A harbor is a protected place with deep water that allows ships to come close to shore.
Transportation
Transportation is the movement of people and goods.
Grid System
A grid system is a set of lines the same distance apart that cross one another to form boxes. The grid on this page shows rows and columns of boxes.
Suburb
Many large cities have smaller communities around them. A smaller city or town built near a large city is called a suburb.
Suburban
A suburban region is made up of all the suburbs around a large city.
Rural
A rural region is in the countryside, away from cities and large towns. Small towns, farms, fields, amid woods make up rural regions. Searcy is a rural community in Arkansas.
Agriculture
Agriculture is the raising of farm animals and the growing of crops for sale. Not all rural communities have farms and ranches.
Economy
An economy is the way a community or country uses goods and services.
Mound
Some groups built mounds, or large hills of dirt, with temples or other buildings on top.
