chapter 2 skeletal systems Flashcards
Functions of bone
support, protection, mineral storage, blood cell formation, anchoring and movement of muscle
Epiphysis
end part of a long bone
diaphysis
shaft of a long bone
articular cartilage
smooth tissue that cover the end of a bone to form joints
cancellous bone
spongy, porous bone
aka trabecular bone
mostly found in the epiphysis of a bone
contains red blood marrow, where hematopoiesis (production of red blood cells) occurs
epiphyseal (growth plate)
thin layer between epiphysis and diaphysis where growth of bone takes place
cortical bone
strong, dense bones found on the outer layer of a bone
(houses yellow marrow blood supply, nerves)
diarthroses (diarthritic)
freely movable joints
ex) all common joints
amphiarthrosis (amphiarthritic)
slightly movable
ex) chondrocostal, pubic
synarthroses (synarthritic)
not movable
ex) sutures of the cranium
synovial joints
type of diarthritic joint, fluid
Trochanter
biggest type of mounds on bones
tubercle
2nd biggest type of mounds on bones
Tuberosity
smallest type of mounds on bones
condyle
little dent on the end of bone
Axial skeleton
any bones on the midsagittal plane
ex) skull, sternum, ribs, spine
appendicular skeleton
bones not touching the midsagittal plane
ex) shoulder, arms, wrists, hand, pelvic girdle, leg, etc.
analgesic drug
pain reliever
anti-inflammatory drug
steroids and non steroids. prescription only
ex) corticosteroids
antipyretic drug
fever reducer
narcotic drug
drug that relieves pain and induces sleep by depressing the nervous system
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
advil, tylenol. prescription not needed to get
immunosuppressants
used for autoimmune conditions by interrupting inflammation
ATT PHYS
attending physician
CRIF
Closed Reduction and Internal Fixation
CT
computerized tomography
