Chapter 2 SIZE - UP Flashcards
What is size up ?
size up determines the size of fire, Determine how many victims you have and is a continuing evaluation of all the problems and conditions that affect the outcome of the fire.
When should size-up be performed ?
Size-up should be begun upon receipt of the alarm and continue until the incident has been controlled.
What is the rule of thumb for collapse anticipation in ordinary construction ?
20 minutes
What are the 13 points size up ?
COAL WAS WEALTH
Modernization of the traditional 13 point size up ?
Combine Area and Height and add Hazardous Material
What are the 5 key variables strongly ties to Occupancy?
- Potential life hazard
- Presence of large, open floor space or small rooms
- Presence of hazardous materials
- Degree of Fire loading
- Possible presence of truss construction
What are the three unusual circumstances that may confuse your size up of height and area ?
Building built on grade, wrap around buildings and interconnected buildings
Three factors concerning smoke in size-up?
Location, color and movement
Building Construction Class 1 / type 1:
Fire resistive. Majority of building is constructed of non combustible material. High rise buildings,
Building construction Class 2:
Non combustible refers to the fuel contributed by structural components, not resistance to fire spread. Exposed metal floors and roof systems and of unprotected steel.
Building Class3:
Ordinary construction - brick and wood joist. Mason and non combustible walls but the floors, roofs, and interior partitions are made of wood
Construction class 4:
Heavy timber the interior columns, beams and girders are of heavy timber (8x8 columns) floors of 3 inch thick wood
Building Class 5:
Wood frame, Walls, floors, and roofs are all made of wood.
NIMS system describes four sides of building
Side A is front side
Side B is is the left side
Side C is the rear of building
Side D is the right side of building
