Chapter 2- Seperating Mixtures Flashcards
What is a Mixture?
A mixture is a group of elements together in a space BUT NOT CHEMICALLY BONDED!!!
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is just one chemical or just one element.
How could you test if something is pure?
You could test if something is pure by checking its attributes for instance if it has a sharp melting point or you could distillate the solvent and see if there is any remains.
What is a solute?
A solute is a solid substance that can be dissolved in a liquid.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is a liquid in which other substances can be disolved in.
What is a solution?
A solution is the mixture that is produced when a solute is disolved in a solvent.
What is solubility?
Solubility is the ability to be disolved into water.
What does saturated mean?
Saturated means when a solvent is holding as much solute as it can.
How is Chromatography useful?
Chromatography is used in airports to detect bombs and is used is forensics in many different ways.
How do you carry out chromatography?
Simple chromatography is carried out on paper. A spot of the mixture is placed near the bottom of a piece of chromatography paper and the paper is then placed upright in a suitable solvent, eg water. As the solvent soaks up the paper, it carries the mixtures with it.
How can evaporation and distillation can be used to obtain
a solvent from a solution?
It works when the liquids have different boiling points. The mixture is heated in a flask.
How does temperature affect solubility?
If a solvent is warmer it will have a higher capacity for solutes and if colder will have less room for solutes.
How does filtering work?
It is a technique used to separate mixtures Eg using filter paper to get rid of a mixture stoping big particles from going down with the small particles. An example of this is sand from water.
How is filtration useful?
Filtration is useful because it helps separating unwanted bigger or smaller things.
