chapter 2 section Flashcards
what are linear equations
A linear equation is an equation for a straight line
these are linear equations.
y = 2x+1
what steps are used to solve linear equations?
1) Clear fractions
2) simplify each side separately as much as possible using the distributive property to clear parenthesis and add like terms.
3) isolate the variable term
4) solve for the variable
5) check by substituting the value obtained in step 4 back into the equation.
what is a Reflexive property?
a = a
7+7 or (x+5 = x+5)
what is symmetric property?
if a = b then b = a
if y = x+9 then x+9=y
what is transitive Property?
if a= b and b = c then a = c
if x=a and a=4y then x=4y
what is a conditional equation?
when there is only one solution to a linear equation.
what is a contradictory equation?
when there’s no solution to a linear equation.
ex) 3=2 never a true statement
what is an identity equation?
when there is an infinite set of solutions. a set of all real numbers.
Ex)2-3=2-3 this statement is always true.
How do you convert a mixed number to a whole number?
Multiply the denominator and the whole number then add the numerator.
What is the 0 exponent rule?
if a is any non-zero real number then a^0=1
What does exponential mean?
of or expressed by a mathematical exponent.
“an exponential curve”
(of an increase) becoming more and more rapid.
“the social security budget was rising at an exponential rate”
What is interval notation
(-12,12)
What is a solution set
-12
What is the distance formula?
Distance = rate*time
What is a compound inequality?
Is formed by joining two inequalities with the words or or.
