Chapter 2 Sec 1 Flashcards
Define substance
A single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has specific makeup- or composition -and a specific set of properties
Define matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Define physical property
A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance
Defined chemical property
A characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances
Define element
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means
Define Atom
The basic particle from which all elements are made
Define chemical bond
When Atoms combined they form a chemical bond, which is a force of attraction between two Atoms
Define molecule
Groups of two or more Atoms held together by chemical bonds
Defined compound
A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio
Define chemical formula
A compound may be represented by a chemical formula, which shows the elements in the compound in the ratio of Atoms
Define mixture
A mixture is made of two or more substances-elements, compounds, or both- that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined
Define heterogeneous mixture
In a heterogeneous mixture, you can see the different parts
Define homogeneous
The substance in a homogeneous mixture, are so evenly mixed that you can’t see the different parts
Define solution
A solution is an example of a homogeneous mixture
