Chemical name
The name of the medication that reflects its chemical composition and molecular structure.
Generic name
Is the official or non-proprietary name the United States adopted names council gives a medication. Each medication has only one generic name. (an example would be ibuprofen.)
Trade name
Is the brand or proprietary name the company that manufactures the medication gives it. One medication can have multiple trade names (for example, Advil and Motrin.).
Uncontrolled substances
Require monitoring by a provider, but do not generally pose risk of misuse and addiction. Antibiotics are an example of this.
Controlled substances
Have a potential for misuse independence, and have a “schedule” classification.
Schedule I: an example is heroin, it has no medical use in the United States.
Schedule II-V have legitimate applications.
Each subsequent level has a decreasing risk of misuse and dependence.
What are the five rights of safe medication administration?
Right client, right medication, right dose, right time, and right route.
However, there are a few more; right documentation, right client, education, right to refuse, right assessment, and right evaluation.
What are the components of a medication prescription?
Clients full name.
Date, and time of the prescription.
Name of the medication
Strength and dosage of the medication.
Route of administration.
Time and frequency of administration.
Quantity to dispense and the number of refills.
Signature of the prescribing provider.
What are the social detriments of health? (This affects daily life and eventually health.)
Economic stability, education, health and healthcare, neighborhood and built environment, social and community context, and food security.
