Chapter 2 Review - Chemistry Flashcards
Alkaline Earth Metals?
less reactive than AM, will burn in air if heated> produced bright flames (used in fireworks). reacts with water. eg Strontium, Radium, Calcium, Magnesium.
Halogens?
non-metals, highly reactive, gases &liquids. room temp. Chlorine, Fluorine, Bromine, Iodine.
Noble Gases?
most stable, unreactive elements> room temp = odourless colourless gas. used in lights (argon& neon). helium floats (lighter than air). eg Radon, Krypton, Neon, Helium.
Alkali Metals?
highly reactive, reacts with both water and oxygen, low melting points @200 degrees. soft (can be cut with a knife). eg. Lithium, Sodium, Calcium, Potassium.
Hard shiny malleable and ductile substances which are good conductors of electricity?
Metals.
Another name for the outermost shell?
Valence Shell.
The atomic _______ indicates the number of P and N in the nucleus of a particular item.
Mass.
The atomic ________ refers to the amount of protons a particular atom contains.
Number.
Created the periodic table?
Mendeleev.
Elements which share some properties with metals and some with non-metals are classified into this group.
Metalloids.
PB?
Lead.
1 proton in nucleus?
Hydrogen.
Sub-atomic particle that has a mass so low that is it not considered a mass.
Electron.
Substances which do not conduct heat or electricity we’ll and are generally gases or brittle solids @room temp.
Non-metals.
