Declaration and betrothal - rings exchanged. Rings made of precious metal, adorned with stones and unpierced

Breaking of Glass - symbolising the smashing of previous lives

43
Q

Catholic Church on Contraception

A

The use of artificial contraception is morally unacceptable by the Church.
God intended man and woman to be a communion of persons through marriage and sexual intercourse

The Pill - affects woman’s hormone levels to prevent ovulation and pregnancy from occurring

Natural contraception (Natural family planning)

45
Q

what are the moral issues arising from human sexuality

A

even though it is a sin to the faith of christianity, it is needed to help keep a couple together, as it helps keep the relationship healthy

even though it keeps a couples relationship healthy, STDs can occur and harm the relationship

how far should the state legislate about how people express their sexuality

46
Q

what are the main features of utilitarianism

A

a consequentialist approach so they will consider the likely outcome of a decision

the principle of the greatest good for the greatest number

act utilitarianism - looks at consequences of a particular act

47
Q

what does christianity say about marriage

A

ordained by God when he created humans

most christians see marriage as a sacred bond between man and woman that it shouldnt be broken and that it should be the background on which children should be brought up on

it is a physical and spiritual bond

it is a sacrament

something that shouldnt be broken

48
Q

does marriage make the world a better place

A

yes

marriage gives people security in relationships because people are likely to take it seriously when they have made a solemn promise

gives a stable background for which children can be brought up on and that parents are more likely to stay together

faithfulness in marriage reduces STDs

there are practical benefits in law eg in relation to things like inheritance

no

there are plenty of secure and loving relationships between people who are not married

49
Q

what supports the teleological arguement

A

everything in the world has a purpose

since there is so much complexity in the world there must be a designer for it all

the eye is so complex. so many different parts to it. a powerful designer must have made it. the only powerful designer able to do this is God

regularity of seasons

50
Q

why would someone disagree with the teleological arguement

A

theory of evolution

design can come about by chance

if world needs a intelligent designer then the designer needs a designer

mechanical cannot be compared to world

analogies are based on assumptions and not fact so are weak

51
Q

what are the main points of the cosmological argument

A

that everything has a cause

there must be an uncaused cause somewhere

that uncaused cause is God

52
Q

how does the cosmological arguement prove Gods existence

A

universe exists, so there must be a cause for that - God

if god doesnt exist then nothing can exist

there must be a first cause - Aquinas said

arguement contradicts itself. states itself that there are no uncaused causes, yet it says God does not need a cause

arguement based on assumptions therefore proves nothing

only shows that God may exist

if god can be without cause, then the universe could also be without a cause as it is as powerful as God
