Chapter 2: Psychology as a Science Flashcards
What are the 3 basic research methods?
- Descriptive (case studies, surveys)
- Correlational (Detecting relationships)
- Experimental (Manipulating an independent variable)
What is a correlational research method?
Correlational research is basically just finding different things that co occur.
i.e. math disability and bad number sense
not experimentally tested
What are the types of correlations?
Positive, negative, no correlation.
slope of graph
What is a correlation coefficient?
The correlation coefficient (r) measures the strength of a relationship.
It ranges from -1 to 1 and is viewed through a line of best fit.
How do you describe data in terms of central tendency and variation?
Central Tendency: Mean, Median, Mode
Variation: Range, Standard Deviation
What type of research was Booee the Chimp first involved in?
Sign Language
What is required (ethically) for human research?
- Voluntary Participation
- Informed consent (versus deception)
- Confidentiality/Anonymity
- Risk to Reward Ratio
- Debriefing
- Institutional Review Board Review
What are protected populations?
People who cannot give consent. (Children, mentally disabled, prisoners)
We give them informed consent/coercion.
In psychological research, subjects are at risk to deception
What is deception?
Deception is when researchers:
- Intentionally misinform participants
- Withhold information from participants
What is the rule of thumb for human experimentation?
when your subjects leave, they should feel at least as good about themselves as when they came in.
