Chapter 2- Properties Of Waves Flashcards
Wavelength
The distance over which the wave’s shape repeats.
Wavelength is measured by the distance from one point on a wave to an identical point later on the wave.
Amplitude
A measure of how far particles in the medium move away from their normal rest position.
Wave Period (usually called period)
The time required for one cycle. You can measure the period by finding the time for one full pattern of a wave to pass a given point.
Frequency
Tells you how many cycles occur in an amount of time, most commonly one second.
Hertz
Frequency is measured by hertz. One hertz is equal to one cycle per second. If ten peaks pass each second, the frequency is 10 hz.
Wavefronts
The peaks can be drawn as as shapes, such as circles or spheres.
Wave Speed
The speed at which a wave travels. It depends on the properties of the medium.
