Power
The ability to get other individuals to do what one wants them to do.
Influence
A form of power based on the ability to persuade others to pursue a desired objective.
Coercion
A form of power based on forced compliance through fear and intimidation.
Violence
The use of physical force or power as a means of achieving ends.
Authority
A form of power based on agreement regarding the right to issue commands and make decisions.
Charismatic authority
Authority based on admiration of the personal qualities of an individual.
Legal authority
A system of authority based on general rules rather than inheritance or personal qualities.
Legitimacy
Belief in the “rightness” of rule.
Modernization
In economics, refers to the adoption of markets and sophisticated technology in place of barter and subsistence production. In politics, the replacement of traditional authority with legal authority.
Natural authority
Authority based on spontaneous deference to an individual’s knowledge or social position.
Public authority
Authority based on institutional office-holding.
Traditional authority
Authority based on birthright and custom.
