Chapter 2 of ACSM Book Flashcards
Purpose of Preparticipation Health Screening
ID individuals with medical contraindications requiring exclusion from exercise programs
Recognition of individuals with significant disease or conditions who should participate in medically supervised programs
Detect individuals who should undergo medical evaluation before initiating program
Screenings could include
Self-guided methods CVD risk factor and classification Medical evaluation (physical exam and stress test) by qualified HCP
CVD Risk Factor Assessment
Provides health/fitness, clinical exercise and health care professionals with important info for development of patient’s treatment plan
CVD Assessment + Determination of Various Diseases Decision Making
Level of medical clearance
Need for exercise testing
Level of supervision for exercise testing/program participation
Exercise-related Event Risk
Greatest in individuals performing unaccustomed physical activity and vigorous intensity
Exercise Testing Before Program
Not recommended except for individuals at high risk
Cardiovascular Event Risk
Increases with exercise intensity and number of CVD risks
Exercise Test Supervision
All patient risk groups can be supervised by nonphysician health care professional if trained in clinical exercise testing and physician is available if needed
Low Risk Supervision
Supervised by nonphysicians without a physician being immediately available
Moderate Risk Supervision
Having physician is recommended, but whether they are readily available depends on local policies and circumstances, health status of patients and training/experience of lab staff
In any exercise testing situation
At least be certified at CPR and AED training
Some staff should be trained at Advanced Cardiac Life Support
All facilities should have
Medical emergency response plan with numbers and procedures
Practice the plan quarterly
Equipped with defibrillator or AED
