Chapter 2 - Naming Flashcards
1
Q
What are the rules for Binary ionic compounds?
A
They are held together through opposite charges on the individual ions.
- Always put positive ion (the metal) first
- Name the positive ion (cation)
- For the Negative ion (anion), add “-ide” to the root of the name.
2
Q
What are the rules for binary ionic compounds containing metals having more than one common charge?
A
- Always put the positivley charged ion (the metal) first.
- Name the positive ion.
- Find the charge of the positive ion (remember that the salt is neutral, so positive and negative charges must cancel out.)
- Place it in parenthesis after the metal, using roman numerals.
- For the negative ion,add “-ide” to the root of the name.
Ex. CuCl: Copper (I) Chloride
CuCl2: Copper (II) Chloride.
