Chapter 2- motor diseases Flashcards
1
Q
AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS
A
- Combined upper and lower motor neuron lesions
- Damage to motor neurons of anterior horns. Lose motor nuclei CNV, IX, XXII
- Demyelination of lateral corticospinal tracts
- Results in denervation atrophy of muscles
- Progressive and deadly
- Genetic: mutation of gene that codes for cu-zn superoxide (SOD1) may be implicated
- Treatment: Riluzole (decreases glutamate release)
2
Q
POLIOMYELITIS

- Enteroviral infection that damages motor neurons of the anterior horns.
- Pure LMN disease
- Flaccid paralysis, atrophy, areflexia, fasciculation
