Chapter 2 lessons 1-4 Flashcards
The process by which one or more substances change to produce on or more different substances
Chemical Reactions
A solid that is produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution
Precipitate
A chemical formula is a way of expressing information about the proportions of atoms that constitute a particular chemical compound, using a single line of chemical element symbols, numbers, and sometimes also other symbols, such as parentheses, dashes, brackets, commas and plus (+) and minus (−) signs.
Chemical Formula
A chemical equation is the symbolic representation of a chemical reaction in the form of symbols and formula, wherein the reactant entities are given on the left-hand side and the product entities on the right-hand side.
Chemical Equation
a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
Reactant
a substance produced during a natural, chemical, or manufacturing process.
Product
Antoine Lavoisier stated that “The law of conservation of mass means that the atoms of an object cannot be created or destroyed, but can be moved around and be changed into different particles.”
Law of Conservation of Mass
combination or composition, in particular.
Synthesis
A decomposition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds. These reactions often involve an energy source such as heat, light, or electricity that breaks apart the bonds of compounds.
Decomposition Reaction
A single-displacement reaction, also named single-replacement reaction, is a type of oxidation-reduction chemical reaction when an element or ion moves out of one compound and into another - that is, one element is replaced by another in a compound.
Single Displacement Reaction
A double displacement reaction, also known as a double replacement reaction or metathesis, is a type of chemical reaction where two compounds react, and the positive ions (cation) and the negative ions (anion) of the two reactants switch places, forming two new compounds or products.
Double Displacement Reaction
An exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that releases energy by light or heat. It is the opposite of an endothermic reaction. Expressed in a chemical equation: reactants → products + energy.
Exothermic Reaction
In thermodynamics, the term endothermic process describes a process or reaction in which the system absorbs energy from its surroundings; usually, but not always, in the form of heat.
Endothermic Reaction
The law of conservation of energy, a fundamental concept of physics, states that the total amount of energy remains constant in an isolated system. It implies that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but can be change from one form to another.
Law of Conservation of Energy
In chemistry, activation energy is a term introduced in 1889 by the Swedish scientist Servant Arrhenius to describe the minimum energy which must be available to a chemical system with potential reactants to result in a chemical reaction.
