Chapter 2 Lesson 3 Flashcards
What is Newton’s Second Law of Motion?
The acceleration of an object is equal to the net force acting on the object divided by the object’s mass.
What is circular motion?
Any motion in which an object is moving along a curved path.
What is centripetal force?
In circular motion, a force that acts perpendicular to the direction of motion, toward the center of the curve.
How do forces change an object’s motion?
By changing its speed, its direction, or both.
What type of forces can change the velocity of an object?
Only unbalanced forces.
How can you tell that unbalanced forces are acting on an object at rest?
When the object starts moving.
What happens if a net force acts on a moving object in the direction that the object is moving?
The object will speed up.
What happens if a net force acts on a moving object in the direction opposite to its motion?
The object will slow down.
How can unbalanced forces change the velocity of a moving object?
By changing the direction of the object’s motion.
What effect does gravity have on a ball that is thrown?
It changes the direction of the ball, pulling it downward.
Another name for change in velocity over time is _______.
acceleration
