Q

Describe the two parts of a sound wave.

A

Compressions are when the particles of the medium are close together
Rarefactions are when the particles of the medium are far apart

Q

Know the mediums sound can and cannot travel through.

A

It can travel through solids, liquids and gases but not space. Space is considered a vacuum.

Q

How does density affect the speed of sound?

A

In denser material it is harder for the particles to move as sound waves pass by. The more dense the material, the more mass it has in the given volume.
More dense = slower speed of sound

Less dense = faster speed of sound

Q

How does temperature affect the speed of sound?

A

In liquids or gases sound travels slower than higher temperatures. At lower temperatures the particles of a medium move more slowly than at higher temperatures

Q

How does stiffness affect the speed of sound?

A

Sound travels more quickly in stiff media because when the particles of the medium compressed they quickly spread out again. Sound travels fastest in solids, then liquids, then gases
