Chapter 2: Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is water made up of?
2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen molecule
True or False: Is it hydrogen when it is a slightly positive charge?
True
True or False: Is it oxygen when it is a slightly negative charge?
True
What special properties does hydrogen bond give water?
Cohesion, Adhesion and High Specific Capacity
What is Universal Solvent?
It is when hydrogen bond allows ionic compounds and polar compounds to dissolve easily in water.
How does polarity help the solvent?
Well polarity makes water a good solvent for ionic compounds or polar covalent molecules.
What is a polar molecule?
The negatively charged oxygen end of the molecule is highly attracted to the positive ion in ionic compounds. This attraction permits the positive and negative ions to be pulled apart and dissolved in water.
The same attraction happens with the negative ion and the positive hydrogen end of the water molecule.
What is the definition of Cohesion?
The attraction of water molecules to other water molecules.
What happens due to cohesion?
Surface tension
Why are water molecules strongly attracted to each other?
It is because water molecules are charged.
Does water for droplets easier than other liquids?
Yes
What does surface tension do?
They keep organic debris on the water surface.
What is the definition of Adhesion?
- The attraction of water molecules to other charged particles.
- Attraction of water molecules to molecules of other substances.
Are gases slightly charged?
Yes
What does Adhesion allow you to do?
It allows you to fill a gas over the top.
