Chapter 2: Kinetic Particle Theory Flashcards
Describe the kinetic particle arrangement of a solid.
Very strong forces of attraction between particles, very closely packed in an orderly manner, vibrating about their fixed positions with low energy levels.
Describe the kinetic particle arrangement of a liquid.
Strong forces of attraction between particles, closely packed in a disorderly manner, particles slide past each other with moderate energy levels.
Describe the kinetic particle arrangement of gas.
Weak forces of attraction between particles, far apart in a disorderly manner, move freely and rapidly in random, with the highest levels of energy.
Why is the temperature constant in the middle of a heating/cooling curve?
Heating:
Because heat energy is taken in to overcome forces of attraction
Cooling:
Because heat energy is given out to form forces of attraction
