Why was James I a good King?
When James I became king of England he was an already experienced King. He was also an intellectual, outgoing man who enjoyed debate and dealing with people. He was also pragmatic.
What were the points of contract?
Communication between the Political Nation and the monarch was crucial to the functioning of the English political system.
What was Charles I’s personality like?
Charles was shy and hampered by a speech defect, he was seen as unapproachable and he was uncommunicative with parliament
What did Charles and James believe in?
Charles and James were both firm believers in the Divine Right Of Kings and they were defensive of their prerogative.
What is the Privy Council?
The king’s selected advisers who met in private to shape the monarch’s wishes into policy and oversee their implementation
What was the Bedchamber?
The monarch’s private living space, the Gentlemen of the Bedchamber were courtiers who waited upon the monarch in these rooms, they provided companionship .
What was patronage?
Political success was based on establishing a network of support. Those furtherest up the system could act as patrons to support ‘clients’ lower down the system.
What Catholicism?
The faith by the Christian Church headed by the Pope; in the eyes of many English at the time, catholicism was linked with absolutism
What was Puritanism?
a radical form of Protestantism; Puritans saw themselves as the ‘godly’ ones they sought a further reformation of the Church of England to remove the remnants of Catholicism that remained after the Reformation.
What was a favourite?
A courtier who became especially close to the monarch and thereby gained enormous political influence; access to the monarch at court meant powers
