Chapter 2 - Ionic Bonding Flashcards

1
Q

What are ions?

A

Electrically charged particles (+ve or -ve), they have lost or gained electrons so the number of positive protons does not balance the number of negative electrons

Q

What is the formation of an ion?

A
  1. metals lose electrons depending on which group they’re in in the periodic table (e.g. group 1 lose 1, group 2 lose 2 etc)
  2. Losing the electrons in outer shell = stable ion and positively charged
  3. non-metals gain electrons to fill outer shell (need 8)
  4. group 7 gain 1, group 6 gain 2 etc
