Chapter 2 - Ionic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What are ions?
A
Electrically charged particles (+ve or -ve), they have lost or gained electrons so the number of positive protons does not balance the number of negative electrons
2
Q
What are all metal ions?
A
Positive - more protons than electrons
3
Q
What is oxidation and reduction?
A
Oxidation: loss of electrons
Reduction: gain of electrons
4
Q
What is the formation of an ion?
A
- metals lose electrons depending on which group they’re in in the periodic table (e.g. group 1 lose 1, group 2 lose 2 etc)
- Losing the electrons in outer shell = stable ion and positively charged
- non-metals gain electrons to fill outer shell (need 8)
- group 7 gain 1, group 6 gain 2 etc
5
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
metal + non-metal
6
Q
Properties of ionic bonding:
A
- taken not shared
- electrically charged
- high melting and boiling point
