Q

explain the difference in energy requirements between a pregnant woman and a non-pregnant woman

A

The pregnant woman needs more energy so her baby can develop

17
Q

Describe a simple experiment to measure the amount of energy in a food

A
  1. weigh a small amount of the food, pick it up with a mounted needle
  2. add a set volume of water to a boiling tube.
  3. measure the temperature of water and light the food sample.
  4. immediately, hold the food under the boiling tube until it goes out.
  5. Measure the temperature change.

energy in food = Mass of water x Temperature change of water x 4.2

18
Q

give one way you could make the experiment to measure the amount of energy in a food more accurate

A

Insulate the boiling tube, E.G. with foil. this would minimise heat loss and keep more energy in water.

19
Q

What is the main role of digestive enzymes?

A

break down big molecules into smaller ones

20
Q

Name the enzyme that converts starch into glucose

A

amylase converts starch into maltose… maltase converts maltose into glucose

21
Q

what does protease do?

A

Protease converts proteins into amino acids

22
Q

when lipids are digested, what molecules are they broken down into?

A

glycerol and fatty acids

23
Q

Where in the body is bile stored?

A

bile is stored in the gall bladder

24
Q

Where in the body is bile produced?

A

Bile is produced in the liver

25
Q

Where in the body is bile used?

A

Bile is used in the stomach

26
Q

what are the two functions of bile?

A

Bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats

27
Q

explain how villi help with absorption in the small intestine

A

Villi increase the surface area of the Small intestine as each villi has their own micro villi.
