Chapter 2- Forces Flashcards
Define a force
A force is a push or a pull that acts in a certain direction i.e. force is a physical action
Which points should you include when describing a force?
WHAT is exerting the force? ON WHAT is the force being exerted? The DIRECTION in which the force is being exerted. The MAGNITUDE (size) of the force The UNIT of the physical quantity, force
Force is a vector quantity, define a vector quantity
A quantity which has magnitude (size) and direction
What are the effects of force?
Motion, distortion, direction and rotation
What is Newton’s third law?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
What is the earths force of attraction called?
Gravity
What is the name of the instrument used to measure force?
Spring balance
Define mass
The amount of matter in an object
Write down an equation linking mass and weight
W=mg
What is the formula for resultant force? Define resultant force
Add all the forces
The sum of the forces acting on those objects.
What are balanced and unbalanced forces?
These are forces acting on the same object
Define unbalanced forces
Do not completely cancel each other out. Have an overall effect on the body
Define Balanced forces
Equal magnitudes in opposite directions. Cancel each other out. Resultant force is zero
Define forces of attraction
These forces pull objects together
Define forces of repulsion
These forces push objects apart
