What is democracy?
Democracy is a form of government ‘of the people, by the people, for the people’ -Abraham Lincoln
Name 3 things a census is used for.
1) To number the amount of people and households in the country.
2) To estimate the level of poverty and homelessness in the country.
3) To see the budget given must be spent and why.
What is an amendment?
A change to the detail of a proposed law.
What is a bill?
A draft of a new law that has not yet been passed by the oireachtas.
What is a budget?
The government’s annual financial plan.
What is the Irish Constitution?
Bunreacht na hÉireann
What is a cathairleach?
Chairperson of the Seanad Éireann.
What is Dáil Éireann?
The House of Representatives known as the Dáil.
What is dissolution?
An action by the president to end the current term of the Dáil.
What is a green paper?
Discussion document setting out government’s ideas and allowing for comment.
What is a member?
A member of either house of the Oireachtas.
What is a minister?
A member of government that manages a department.
What is the Oireachtas?
National parliament of Ireland that consists of the President, the Dáil, and the Seanad.
What is an Order Paper?
Document which sets out business before each house.
What is the Seanad Éireann?
The Irish senate, known as the Seanad for short.
