(a) The Reichstag Fire
EX
On 27 February 1933, the Reichstag building had been set on fire. A young Dutch Communist was arrested and charged with
starting the fire. Hitler used this as evidence that the Communists were plotting against his government, calling it the actions of Communists terrorists. Hitler convinced Hindenburg that this was the beginning of a Communist uprising and
persuaded him to pass the Decree for the Protection of People and State which gave Hitler emergency powers. All civil and political rights, such as the right to hold meetings, were suspended. This meant that anyone could be imprisoned and detained by the police without trial.
A
This allowed Hitler to consolidate power as the Germans gave their support to Hitler
because he was seen as a hero for preventing communist takeover and restoring order.
The Reichstag Fire & Emergency Decree
also allowed Hitler to eliminate his political
