Chapter 2 Condensation Polymers And Biomass Flashcards
What is the petrochemical industry?
The industry that focuses on the production of petroleum fuels and alternatives to fossil fuels
What is a biopolymer?
Biopolymers are polymers formed from a process called condensation polymerisation.
Examples include: DNA, glucose, cellulose, starch.
Describe the structure of cellulose
Cellulose is formed from the condensation polymerisation of beta glucose. It form cellulose when the oxygen links between the glucose molecules alternate in direction (up down)
Identify the source of glucose
Glucose is found predominately in biomass
what is a condensation polymer?
a condensation polymer is a polymer that in the process of its polymerisation produces H2O
describe the reaction when a condensation polymer is formed
the monomers connect via a hydroxide molecule giving of a hydroxide free radical as well as a hydrogen free radical which react with each other to form a water molecule.
Describe structure of glucose
Glucose is a ring shaped hydrocarbon with a methanoic acid branch 4OH branches and one oxygen in the ring
Describe cellulose
Cellulose is a polymer of beta glucose
It uses alternating bonds between rings
Cellulose is a condensation polymer explain how
When the beta glucose combines it removes a OH and a H which form H2O
