Manner of articulation
Different ways a speaker blocks airflows through oral cavity
Plosive
A consonant produced by stopping airflow lips, teeth, or palate, followed by airburst
Ex. Pea and bee
Fricative
A consonant that’s produced by forcing air through a narrow passage in the mouth.
Ex. Fig, vest, them, thumb
Affricative
A consonant that starts as a stop but transitions into a fricative sound.
Ex. Church and juice
Liquid
Consonant sound produced by partially closing the mouth by the tongue creating vowel-like sound.
Ex. Rug and luck
Glide
A sound that is similar to a vowel but function as a syllable boundary.
Ex. Wing and you
Bilabial
Sound produced by both lips
Alveolar
Speech sound produced by placing tongue on or near the alveolar ridge (hard bump behind teeth)
Velar
Consonant sound made by touching the back of the tongue to the velum (soft palate)
Ex. King, gap, ring
Glottal
A sound produced by the glottis (part of the throat containing VF)
Ex. High
Jargon
String of sounds used to produce conversation intonation but lack clear meaning
