Q

Edward Deci revealed that students are more motivated and will be resilient in the face of adversity if teachers construct environments that satisfy what three (3) needs?

A

1) The need to feel connected and to sense that their teachers believe in them & treat them with respect.
2) Students want to feel autonomous and possess a sense of self-determination. It is also noteworthy that students want to feel they are responsible for their own actions.
3) They want to feel competent, successful and accomplished. They want teachers who reinforce good behaviour and achievements with encouragement.

Q

What are three (3) of the six (6) strategies suggested in the textbook that teachers can use to help nurture students’ emotional needs?

A

1) Provide an orientation for students at the beginning of the year to plant seeds for the students’ positive mindset and behavioural responsibility.
2) Have realistic expectations for behaviour and learning. Display these rules somewhere in the classroom, so students know what they are expected to do in class.
3) Reinforce responsibility in the classroom and provide opportunities for students to make choices, reinforcing a sense of autonomy.

Q

What is the difference between PBIS and traditional ways of discipline?

A

Traditional discipline is given to students to correct behaviour which often leads to student compliance and not engaged learning. Whereas PBIS focuses on viewing misbehaviour as communication, and punishment isn’t the solution. PBIS is not ignoring the bad behaviour and not giving just discipline but rather teaching explicit expectations, preventing further problems and using logical consequences so it does not impede student learning.
