Chapter 2- ATP Flashcards
What do organisms use ATP for?
Anything from:
- metabolism
- movement
- active transport
- secretion
- activation of molecules
What is energy?
The ability to do work
ATP + H2O makes?
ADP + Pi + Energy
What kind of reaction is used to synthesise ATP?
Condensation reaction (water is removed in the process)
What kind of reaction is used to release energy from ATP?
Hydrolysis reaction (water is used to convert it into ADP and Pi)
Where does photophosphorylation take place?
In chlorophyll-containing plant cells during photosynthesis
Where does oxidative phosphorylation take place?
In the mitochondria during the process of electron transport
Where does substrate-level phosphorylation take place?
In plant and animal cells when phosphate groups are transferred from donor molecules to make ATP eg formation of pyruvate at the end of glycolysis
Why is ATP a good immediate source of energy?
Only takes one step to release energy and each molecule releases energy in small, manageable quantities
Why does ATP need to be constantly made?
ATP cannot be stored in the same way that fats and carbohydrates can
How can ATP make an enzyme-catalysts reaction occur more readily?
The phosphate molecule transferred from ATP to other molecule make it more reactive so lowers the activation energy
