Chapter 2 - Atoms, Ions and Compounds Flashcards
What makes up the nucleus?
Protons and neutrons
What subatomic particle occupies the region around the nucleus?
Electrons
How are electrons arranged?
In shells around the nucleus
what is the relative mass of electrons, protons and neutrons?
Electron 1/1836
Proton 1
Neutron 1
Why do atoms have no overall charge?
Same number of electrons and protons so the charges cancel out.
Define atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Define isotopes
They are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different masses
Define ion
A charged atom. Where the number of electrons and the number of protons differ.
Chemical notation of mass number and atomic number:
- Mass number; A= protons+neutrons
- Atomic number: Z= nº of protons
What are cations?
Positive ions, atoms with fewer electrons than protons
What are anions?
Negative ions, atoms with more electrons than protons.
What is relative atomic mass?
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12 th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
What is relative isotopic mass?
The mass of an isotope relative to 1/12 th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
