Chapter 2 Atoms, Ions And Compounds Flashcards
What is the charge and mass of protons electrons and neutrons?
Proton: mass 1, charge +1
Neutron: mass 1, charge 0
Electron: mass 1/1836 aka negligible, charge -1
What is the atomic number?
Atomic number refers to the amount of protons in the nucleus
What is the mass number on a periodic table?
The mass of an atom, how many protons and neutrons are in the nucleus.
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element (same atomic number) but a different number of neutrons (mass number)
What is an ion and what are the different types, where in the periodic table are they found?
Ions are charged atoms.
A cation is a positively charged ion. These are usually metals
An anion is a negatively charged ion. These are usually non-metals
How do you name a binary compound?
Take the name of the first element but change the ending of the second elements name to -use
For ionic compounds the metal ion always comes first
E.g. sodium chloride
