Chapter 2 - Atoms, Ions and Compounds Flashcards
What is a positive ion called?
Cation
What is a negative ion called?
Anion
What is the definition of relative isotopic mass?
The mass of an isotope relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
What is the definition of relative atomic mass?
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
What equipment is used to find the relative atomic mass of a sample?
A mass spectrometer
What is a binary compound?
A compound that contains two elements only.
What are polyatomic ions?
Ions that contain atoms of more than one element bonded together.
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different masses.
What are on the axis on a mass spectrum?
x - axis = m/z (mass over charge ratio)
y - axis = percentage abundance
What are spectator ions?
Ions that play no part in the reaction. These are cancelled when writing an ionic equation.
What is a mole?
The amount of substance that contains the same number of atoms or particles as 12g of carbon-12 (6.2x10^23).
What is molar mass?
Unit?
The mass of one mole of a substance.
Unit: gmol^-1
What is the molar gas volume at RTP?
24dm^3
What is a crystal?
A solid whose atoms are regularly arranged in a regular 3 dimensional pattern.
