Chapter 2 Atomic Structure and Interatomic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What are the primary bondings?
A
Primary bondings = chemical bonding
- Ionic (metal + nonmetal, donate and accept e-)
- Metallic (metal + metal, delocalized e-cloud)
- Covalent (nonmetals or e- sharing)
2
Q
What are the secondary bondings?
A
Secondary bondings = “Intermolecular force”
• induced by dipole moment
• Van der Waals Force
• with dispersion forces such as Debye, London, Keamson and Pauli.
3
Q
Valence Electrons affect properties such as….
A
Chemical
Electrical
Physical
Optical
4
Q
Why are metals ductile and ceramics brittle? Explain in terms of bonding.
A
Metals are ductile due to the non-directional bonding of metallic bonds. It allows “slip” in the structure
Ceramics have ionic bond which are directional due to the influence of the charges.
