Chapter 2 Apologetics Flashcards
Beyond the physical nature of being, existence and reality are studied
Metaphysics
An illusion superimposed upon the only true reality
Maya
There’s a reality that exist outside of your mind
Metaphysical realm
Rejects the material substance apart from the mind
Idealism
Is the assumption that the same natural laws and processes that operate in the universe now have always operated in the universe in the past apply everywhere
Principle of Uniformity
If you believe only on faith, and you find no place for reason in your religious endeavors, you have fallen into the pit
Fideism
The results of a hypothesis are easily proven by simple investigation
Perfect induction
Define Metaphysicas and how Aristotle make it work.
The science in which the nature of being, existence, and reality are investigated. Aristotle wrote, “This science is quite distinct from what we may call the special sciences, none of which investigates Being in its purely general aspect as Being, but each of which rather cuts off some partial aspect of Being and studies the set if properties belonging to that partial aspect.
What’s the difference between Idealism and Realism?
Metaphysical Realism presupposes that there is an external world that exists independently of your mind. If you observe an object, that object really does exist in the real world.
Idealism- generally rejects any existence of a material substance that exists apart from the mind.
This we can assert that the only things that are real t an idealists are the ideas that exists in the mind.
What is the famous example of a tree that is associated with George Berkeley?
It can be asserted that since we have seen multiple trees fall and make sounds; then this falling tree was no different.
The statement reason alone cannot demonstrate is real that T/F and why?
False, you need to have faith, evidence and reason.
What is the difference between Soft and Hrd determinism?
Hard determinism is we reply that the will is ruled by hereditary and environment.
Soft determinism is the theory that human behavior and actions are wholly determined by casual events, but human free will does exist when defined as the capacity to act according to one’s nature.
What is Machans main thesis? What is he trying to say?
“Human beings are able to cause their actions and they are therefore responsible for some of what they do.”
Why is freewill a better way to explain peoples lives than determinism?
Free will gives people a choice that people choose that explains why we choose right and wrong decisions. Our choices are not determined from the environment because sometimes we don’t choose to do the same things are parents do or say.
How does Kant’s “ought implies can” affect the notion of free will?
That “only if it is possible to choose”, must have the ability to choose one or the other. “To do something can it be the case that it ought to be done”
