Q

How were the Andes Mountains formed?

A

The heavier Nazca plate and the lighter South American plate collided. The Nazca plate was pushed down into the mantle. The rocks that lie on the plates were compressed and forced upwards. The layers of rocks buckled and cracked into a series of anticlines and synclines.

Q

What is Amorican folding?

A

Amorican folding took place roughly 250 million years ago, when the Eurasian and African plates collided. These mountains have been severely worn down over time, considering how long they’ve been on Earth. Most of Ireland’s fold mountains were formed during this period.
