Chapter 2: Activity at Plate Boundaries - Fold Mountains Flashcards
What plate boundary are fold mountains found along?
Destructive plate boundaries.
How are fold mountains formed?
When two plates come together and collide, the pressure forces rocks to crumple and buckle upwards into a series of folds.
What are the upfolds of fold mountains called?
Anticlines.
What are the downfolds of fold mountains called?
Synclines.
What are some examples of fold mountain regions?
The Himalayas in Asia
The Alps in Europe
The Andes in South America
The Rocky Mountains in North America
How were the Andes Mountains formed?
The heavier Nazca plate and the lighter South American plate collided. The Nazca plate was pushed down into the mantle. The rocks that lie on the plates were compressed and forced upwards. The layers of rocks buckled and cracked into a series of anticlines and synclines.
What is a fault?
A crack or fracture in the crust where the rocks on either side have moved past each other.
What is Amorican folding?
Amorican folding took place roughly 250 million years ago, when the Eurasian and African plates collided. These mountains have been severely worn down over time, considering how long they’ve been on Earth. Most of Ireland’s fold mountains were formed during this period.
What are some examples of Amorican fold mountain ranges?
MacGillycuddy’s Reeks
The Galtees
The Comeraghs
The Knockmealdowns
What is Alpine folding?
Alpine folding only happened 30 to 35 million years ago. These mountains are very high and steep, as they have not had as much time to be worn down.
What are some examples of Alpine fold mountain ranges?
The Andes in South America
The Himalayas in Asia
The Rockies in North America
What is self-sufficiency?
Looking after your needs, such as food, yourself or within a community.
What does sustainable mean?
Something that can continue for a long time.
What is eco-tourism?
Tourism relating to wildlife and the natural environment, which supports conservation in the region.
What is an ecosystem?
All the living things (animals and plants) in area that interact with each other and rely on each other to live.
