Guru Granth Sahib
The holy scriptures of the Sikh faith, regarded as the ultimate authority
Mool mantra
The “main chant” a statement of all the core beliefs at the beginning of the Guru Granth Sahib
Gurdwara
A Sikh place of worship; literally means “the door of the guru”
Singh
Derived from Sanskrit word meaning lion, this is the mandatory surname for all male members of the Khalsa.
Kaur
Meaning princess, this is the mandatory last name for all female members of the Khalsa
Karma
Destiny; consequences of one’s actions. Our actions create good or bad karma.
Kachera
One of the five k’s; plain cotton shorts enabling swift action in war, symbolising chastity
Granthi
People who read from and look after the Guru Granth Sahib. Anyone can do this.
Kangha
Wooden comb to keep tidy 5K
Kesh
Uncut hair 5K
Adi Granth
A collection of hymns and writing of the early sikh gurus. It means the first book.
Martyr
Somebody who is killed for their beliefs
Langar
- Gurus kitchen or the free kitchen within each Gurdwara

Khalsa
The community of the “pure ones”; the body of committed sikhs.
Amrit
A mix of sugar and water prepared by the Panj Pyare, used in the ceremony of iniation and sometimes in a birth ceremony.
