Chapter 2 Flashcards
Law of Conservation of Mass
Mass not created/destroyed
Law of Definite Proportion
Given compound always contains exactly the same proportion of elements by mass.
Atomic Number
of protons = # of electrons in a neutral atom
Mass Number
of protons + # of neutrons
Chemical Bonds
Force that holds atoms together.
Covalent Bonds
Atoms in molecules held together by these. Formed through sharing electrons. Tend to form between non-metallic elements.(Ex.H20,NO2,CO2)
Molecule
Made up of two or more atoms. Simplest particle/unit.
Structural Formula
Indicates individual bonds and can indicate molecular shape
Space-Filling Model
Ball w/ half balls attached
Ball- and -stick Model
Balls and sticks attached together
Cation
Positively charged molecule. #electrons< # protons. ex. Mg -> Mg2+ + 2e-
Anion
Negatively charged molecule. # electrons> # protons. ex. S+2e- ->S2-
Ionic Bonding
Result from electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions (Ex. NaCl)
