Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is a random process?
a situation in which we know what outcomes could happen
What is probability?
0 <= P(A) <= 1
What is a disjoint (mutually exclusive) outcome?
outcomes that cannot happen at the same time.
ie: coin toss
What is a non-disjoint outcome?
outcomes that can happen at the same time.
ie: a drawn card can both be an ace and hearts
What is the probability that A or B occur?
The sum of their individual probabilities
What is the probability that at least A or B ocurring
P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)
What are the 3 properties of
- The events listed must be disjoint
- Each probability must be between 0 and 1
- The probabilities must total 1
What is a sample space
Collection of all possible outcomes of a trail
ie: what is the sample space for the gender of a kid ?
S = {M, F}
What are complementary events?
two mutually exclusive events whose probabilities add up ti 1
