Chapter 2 Flashcards
Syntax
The syntax of a language specifies the basic expressions of a language and the rules that determine which combinations of those expressions count as sentences of the language.
Semantics
How the sentences of the language are to be interpreted
Metalanguage
When we use a language to talk about a language
Object language
The langue that we are talking about
Atomic sentences
the sentence letters of SL constitute the atomic sentences of SL. They are not formed or compounded from other sentences.
Compound sentences
All non-atomic sentences are compound sentences, so called because they are formed or compounded from other sentences of SL.
Component
- P itself
- The immediate components (if any) of P
- The components of P’s immediate components
Truth-functional use of a connective
A sentential connective, of a formal or natural language, is truth-functionally if and only if it is used to generate a compound sentence from one or more sentences in such a way that the true-value of the generated compound is wholly determined by the truth-values of those one or more sentences from which the compound is generated, not matter what those truth-values may be.
