Chapter 2 Flashcards
What are the two types of glands in the body?
- Endocrine glands
- Exocrine glands
Define an exocrine gland and give examples
- A gland that secretes into a duct that carries the secretions to the body cavities
- E.g. sweat glands, mucous glands and salivary glands
Define an endocrine gland and give examples
- A gland that secretes hormones directly into the extracellular fluid that surrounds the cells that makeup the gland
- The secretion then usually passes into the capillaries to be transported by the blood
- Ductless gland
- E.g. thyroid gland, testes/ovaries, pancreas
Define a releasing factor
A hormone which is secreted by the hypothalamus that stimulates the release of hormones needed by the body
Define an inhibiting factor
A hormone that slows the release of other hormones of which there may be too much of in the body
Hypothalamus vs. Pituitary Gland: where are each located
Hypo: located in the brain
PG: located just underneath the brain
The infundibulum connects the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland
Hypothalamus vs. Pituitary Gland: what does each regulate?
Hypo: regulates basic body functions such as - body temperature, water balance and heart rate
PG: regulates body functions such as - growth, metabolism and reproductive cycles
