Define an exocrine gland and give examples

A
  • A gland that secretes into a duct that carries the secretions to the body cavities
  • E.g. sweat glands, mucous glands and salivary glands

Define an endocrine gland and give examples

A
  • A gland that secretes hormones directly into the extracellular fluid that surrounds the cells that makeup the gland
  • The secretion then usually passes into the capillaries to be transported by the blood
  • Ductless gland
  • E.g. thyroid gland, testes/ovaries, pancreas

Define a releasing factor

A

A hormone which is secreted by the hypothalamus that stimulates the release of hormones needed by the body

A

A hormone that slows the release of other hormones of which there may be too much of in the body

Hypo: regulates basic body functions such as - body temperature, water balance and heart rate
PG: regulates body functions such as - growth, metabolism and reproductive cycles
